The Catahoula Chapter was organized April 16, 1977, at the home of Mrs. Seamon Hendricks in Harrisonburg, Louisiana. Mrs. Hallye L. Webb served as organizing regent and was also elected as the first regent of the chapter. After consideration of a number of names for the chapter, "Catahoula" was selected as the membership would be comprised of residents of Catahoula Parish. The name, "Catahoula," derived from the Choctaw term, "Okattahoula," meaning "Clear Water."
With pride in Catahoula's Indian heritage, the Daughters of the Catahoula Chapter have worked to preserve American customs and traditions such as quilting, gardening, soap making, and other Colonial crafts. The Catahoula Chapter has sought to promote public awareness of historical events and patriotic practices. Recognition and appreciation of area veterans remains a priority for the Catahoula Daughters. Annually, an area student is selected for the DAR Good Citizens Award and the recipient's school receives an American flag in honor of the student.
