The John James Audubon Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters
of the American Revolution was organized in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana,
in 1952 and was approved by NSDAR on January 16, 1954. There were twenty-five
charter members. Those serving as the first officers were: Clara Indiana
Faulk Roberts, Regent; Ruth Avant Beard, Vice Regent; Carrie Virginia
Schwing Tomb, Chaplain; Emily Faulk Stafford, Rec. Secretary; Elizabeth
Stafford Smith Annen, Cor. Secretary; Emily Clara Roberts Robinson, Treasurer;
Carrie Tomb Weems, Registrar; Lydia Cooke Wickliffe, Historian and Irene
Hamby Smith, Librarian.
Other charter members were: Bette Newman Canning, Grace King Coxe, Althea
Schwing Cointment, Angie Miller Denny, Ethel Claiborne Dameron, Elizabeth
Taylor Evans, Belva Wasson Hair, Cynthia Belva Hair, Betty Jane R. Krieg,
Flora Cooper Langlois, Angie Cheek Miller, Maria Schwing Middleton,
Ava Phillips Matta, Elizabeth Miller Singleton, Mildred Foreman Virgilio,
and Emma Thompson Wilkinson.
Of the twenty-five charter members, the following served as regents:
Mrs. Thomas P. (Clara) Roberts served two terms, one term in the organizing
period 1952-1953 and then again 1954-1955; Mrs. John (Carrie) Tomb, served
from 1955-1957; Mrs. Whitney (Flora) Langlois, served from January
to May 1958; Mrs. Robert (Emily) Stafford, served from 1958-1960; Mrs.
William (Elizabeth "Danie") Singleton, served from 1975-1974
and Mrs. William (Ruth) Beard, served from May 1977 to March 1978.
John James Audubon Chapter has two charter members, Mrs. William B.Singleton
and Mrs. Alfred Smith who are still active members.
